Environment Canada says Garden Hill, Manitoba, will enjoy summer-like warmth through Tuesday, but rain is expected to arrive Tuesday night followed by much cooler air.
On Monday afternoon, Island Lake Airport recorded sunny skies and a temperature of 25.2 degrees Celsius, with east winds at 22 km/h gusting to 37 km/h. Tuesday is expected to be the warmest day of the week, with a high of 30 degrees Celsius under mainly sunny skies. That is about 12 degrees above the seasonal normal high of 18 degrees for early June.
The hot, dry stretch offers a good chance for residents to be outside before conditions change sharply. Garden Hill is a remote First Nations community on the shore of Island Lake, reachable only by air and seasonal ice roads. Forecasts are closely watched here for travel and daily planning.
By Wednesday, periods of rain are expected, and the daytime high will drop to just 11 degrees. Thursday will remain cloudy with a 60 percent chance of showers and a high of 16 degrees. Overnight lows through the second half of the week will dip to between 5 and 9 degrees.
Residents with outdoor plans early in the week should make the most of the sunshine. Those with mid-week activities will need to prepare for wet weather and a nearly 20-degree drop in temperatures from Tuesday to Wednesday.
