The City of Grande Prairie is looking to fill several new positions this month, with applications closing between June 8 and June 19, 2026. The postings include roles in policing, community services, and administration, as the city deals with steady growth and a major policing change.
A Peace Officer position closes on June 8, while a Heavy Equipment Operator posting wraps up June 15. The city is also hiring a Community Connections Manager, a Detention Management Unit Guard, a Program Instructor II, and a System Administrator, all closing June 19. An Administrative Assistant role for training support closes June 16.
The hiring comes as the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) prepares to become the city’s primary police force later this year. The service is recruiting heavily, aiming for more than 225 staff, including 110 officers, 27 peace officers, and over 50 civilian support workers. New police recruits start at $76,854 a year, climbing to $113,859 after five years, with a lifelong pension plan.
Grande Prairie’s population hit 71,160 in 2025, the ninth largest in Alberta. The city saw $165 million in building permits last year, the most in five years. A 2026 budget with a 4.34 per cent tax increase is helping pay for services, including the policing transition.
The region had one of Alberta’s lowest unemployment rates at 4.9 per cent in May 2026, which can make hiring a challenge. A workforce study by Deloitte projects more than 85,000 jobs in the northwestern Alberta region by 2028.
