The Ponoka Arts, Recreation and Cultural Society is hosting the Ponoka Disc Golf Community Classic at Riverside Rotary Park on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The event marks the first major community tournament since the 18-hole disc golf course opened nearly a year earlier, and all proceeds will support PARCS community initiatives and contribute toward a future field house in Ponoka, Alberta.
Organized by PARCS, the charity that provided a $15,000 donation to fund the course’s baskets and signs, the tournament is designed as a fun, community-focused event. The format is two-player doubles with a scramble or best-shot style, open to anyone age 12 and older. Early bird registration is $40 per team until May 19, 2026, then $50 per team, with sign-in at 9:00 a.m. and tee-off at 10:00 a.m.
The disc golf course at Riverside Rotary Park was built without removing any trees, winding through both open and treed areas to offer a challenge for all skill levels. The course, located at 3712 45 or 46 Street, has also been praised for not interfering with other park uses like the playground.
The tournament comes nearly a year to the day after the course’s grand opening on June 14, 2025, which featured a ribbon cutting with Mayor Kevin Ferguson and tips from Andrew Bird, a disc golf enthusiast from Falun, Alberta. The course has since become a popular free activity, with discs available to borrow from the Ponoka Arena Complex or the Ponoka Aquaplex.
Funds raised from Saturday’s tournament will support PARCS’s broader mission to improve recreational facilities in town. A field house has been identified as a priority in the town council’s strategic plan, and PARCS board chair Amanda Henderson-Kada says building partnerships with the town is key to making it happen.
