Camrose area children got a chance to learn how to fish for free on June 13, 2026, at Pleasure Island Fish Pond, about eight kilometres southeast of town. The Alberta Conservation Association hosted its Kids Can Catch event, providing hands-on fishing instruction and conservation activities aimed at getting young people outdoors and connected with nature.
The event was put on with help from the Camrose and District Fish & Game Association, which maintains the pond and has developed it with fishing stations and casting platforms. The pond is stocked each year with rainbow and brown trout by the ACA before the May long weekend.
Kids Can Catch is a province-wide program that drew nearly 4,200 adults and children to more than 24 events across Alberta in 2023-2024, with support from almost 100 organizations. The program teaches new anglers about fishing skills, fish conservation, and how to fish responsibly.
“We had so much fun at our recent Kids Can Catch event! By the look of some of the smiles, we think we have a few more anglers on the line. We hope to see you at our next event in 2027!” the ACA said on its website.
The Camrose event was made possible by presenting sponsors Freshwater Conservation Canada – Northern Lights Fly Fishers Chapter and Inter Pipeline, along with local sponsors Heidelberg Materials and the Alberta Conservation Association. The ACA is funded by levies from hunters and anglers and has put more than $25 million toward conservation projects across the province.
