The Gaynor Family Regional Library in Selkirk, Manitoba is launching its 2026 summer reading program today, giving kids a chance to win from a pool of 32 prizes while building literacy skills over the school break. Registration for the TD Summer Reading Club opens June 16 at the library’s circulation desk at 806 Manitoba Avenue, where families can pick up reading logs, internet codes, stickers and prize ballots.
The program is Canada’s largest bilingual summer reading club for children, delivered by over 2,200 libraries nationwide. It is developed by Toronto Public Library and Library and Archives Canada, with sponsorship from TD Bank Group. The free club welcomes kids of all ages and reading levels, and research shows participation helps prevent learning loss over the summer months.
This year’s local edition has 32 prizes up for grabs, and kids can earn ballots by tracking their reading throughout the summer. The prize draw will happen on Thursday, August 28 at noon. In 2024 the library hosted more than 5,400 children through programming and welcomed nearly 150,000 visitors overall, highlighting its central role in the community.
The launch comes as the library is in the middle of a major expansion supported by $600,000 from the Manitoba government’s GRO program. Construction is in full swing, with the project set to nearly double usable space to 22,500 square feet. Plans include a new children’s area and room for roughly 20,000 more books. Staff are working to keep the library open during construction and limit any closures.
The Gaynor Family Regional Library serves Selkirk, the rural municipalities of St. Andrews and St. Clements, and the Village of Dunnottar. Families can register for the reading club at the circulation desk starting today.
