Port Colborne is getting ready to welcome thousands of visitors as the 48th Annual Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival returns to the city’s waterfront from July 31 to August 3, 2026. The four-day event, held over the Civic Holiday long weekend, will showcase live music, tall ship cruises, and family activities at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park and other downtown locations.
This year’s festival is presented by GIO Rail, a Welland-based railway company that began a four-year presenting sponsorship in 2024 with an annual contribution of $75,000. The partnership highlights the connection between the railway and the region’s marine heritage, which the festival has celebrated since its start in 1979. That first event marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the first Welland Canal, and the festival has grown into a major draw for the Niagara area.
More than 60,000 unique visitors are expected to attend, enjoying free nightly concerts at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park, which can hold up to 15,000 guests. A highlight of the festival is the Empire Sandy, Canada’s largest sailing tall ship, a 200-foot topsail schooner that will offer cruises during the festival. The ship has become a signature attraction, allowing guests to experience the marine history of the canal firsthand.
Fireworks are planned for Sunday, August 2 at approximately 10 p.m. along the Welland Canal, weather and Seaway traffic permitting. Organizers have scheduled a special announcement for June 18, 2026, at the Vale Health & Wellness Centre to reveal the entertainment lineup, building anticipation for the summer event. The festival was recognized as a Top 100 Event by Festivals and Events Ontario for 2025.
Residents and visitors can find more details, including ticket information and schedules, on the official Canal Days website. The festival remains a key celebration of Port Colborne’s unique role in the historic waterway, bringing together live music, heritage, and community spirit.
