Most city services in Sault Ste. Marie will take a break on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 for Canada Day, affecting everything from garbage collection to bus rides. The City of Sault Ste. Marie has released its holiday schedule, so residents can plan ahead for the closures and adjusted services.
If your garbage, leaf and yard waste, or recycling is normally picked up on Wednesdays, you will need to put your bins out one day later. Collection moves to Thursday, July 2 this week. The City Landfill and Household Hazardous Waste Depot will be closed, but for any urgent public works issues, residents can call 705-759-5201 for 24-hour emergency service.
Getting around the city will look different too. Regular Sault Transit buses will not run on Canada Day. Only the accessible Parabus service will operate. The transit main office will also be closed. For transit questions, you can call 705-759-5438.
While many buildings will be locked up for the holiday, including the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre, public libraries, the Northern Community Centre arena, and the GFL Memorial Gardens box office, there are still ways to enjoy the day. The annual Canada Day celebrations kick off at 2 p.m. at the Roberta Bondar Park Tent Pavilion with opening ceremonies, followed by entertainment and attractions. A fireworks display will light up the sky at dusk. The Poutine Feast also gets underway at the Downtown Plaza from July 1 to 5, running daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Looking to cool off? The John Rhodes pool will have holiday hours, with a parent and child/lane swim from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a public swim from 1:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Peter G. Manzo and V.E. Greco pools are open daily from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Splash pads at Bellevue Park and Manzo Park are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Both Bellevue Marina and Bondar Marina will welcome boaters from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
