Island Lake First Nations Family Services is hiring a full-time Child and Family Services Worker at its Winnipeg office to help support families from Garden Hill Anisininew Nation and other communities in the Island Lake area of northeastern Manitoba. The application deadline is July 9, 2026, at 4:30 PM.
The Island Lake First Nations Family Services serves well over 10,000 people across Garden Hill, St. Theresa Point, Wasagamack, and Red Sucker Lake Anisininew Nations. The new position will focus on family well-being programs for these communities, with a salary range of $52,295 to $81,856 per year.
This hiring comes as Garden Hill continues to recover from recent hardships. In April 2026, the community’s water treatment plant was damaged after a break-in, forcing at least 15 dialysis patients to be evacuated and residents to rely on bottled water. Grand Chief Alex McDougall of Anisininew Okimawin described the situation as “crisis after crisis, it is not stopping, it is continuing to escalate, and the frustration is growing,” and called for infrastructure investments to prevent such events.
Island Lake First Nations Family Services was originally part of the Awasis Agency of Northern Manitoba starting in 1983, then became an independent agency in 1997. The agency operates within a child welfare system where roughly 90 percent of children in care are Indigenous and Manitoba has the highest rate of kids in out-of-home care in the country.
