Monday afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie was already warm, with partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 26.6 C recorded at the airport. The humidex made it feel like 29, and winds were light from the west-northwest at 14 km/h.
Tuesday is expected to be the hottest day, with a high of 29 C and a humidex of 31. Sunshine will dominate early, then a mix of sun and cloud is expected. The UV index is forecast at 8, which is very high, so anyone spending time outdoors should wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
The only significant interruption in the sunny pattern is likely on Wednesday, when a 60 percent chance of showers could bring some relief from the heat. That day will also be noticeably cooler, with a high of just 21 C. Clearer conditions are expected to return by Thursday, with highs rebounding into the low-to-mid 20s, reaching the upper 20s by Friday and Saturday.
This week’s temperatures are a few degrees above the normal July high of 24 C for Sault Ste. Marie. While the humidex will make it feel closer to 30 or 31 at times, it remains well below the threshold for a heat warning in Ontario, which is a humidex of 40 or higher. Environment Canada advises residents to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable neighbours during the warmest parts of the day.
