A catcher from Innisfail, Alberta, grabbed the spotlight at a major league showcase in Philadelphia on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Nathan Flewelling, a 19-year-old in the Tampa Bay Rays system, was named the most valuable player of the MLB All-Star Futures Game after smashing the only home run of the game for the American League.
Flewelling’s two-run shot in the sixth inning broke a close game and powered the American League to a 6-1 win over the National League at Citizens Bank Park. The 365-foot blast came on the first pitch he saw, a 96-mph fastball from Philadelphia Phillies prospect Wen-Hui Pan. “I was looking first-pitch heater right down in the zone,” Flewelling said after the game. “And that’s where I got it, and the rest is history from there.”
The hometown hero’s rise has followed steady success. Flewelling was drafted by the Rays in the third round, 94th overall, in the 2024 Major League draft and signed for $774,000. Before that, he showcased his power with the Sylvan Lake Gulls of the Western Canadian Baseball League, where he hit 5 home runs and drove in 19 runs in just 70 at-bats in 2024. This season, playing for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the Rays’ High-A farm team, he has already hit 16 home runs with 47 RBIs and a strong .890 on-base plus slugging percentage.
The achievement didn’t go unnoticed back home.
