Global News is shutting down its local production studios in Edmonton and Calgary, moving newscasts to a centralized production hub. The changes, announced July 16, 2026 by parent company Corus Entertainment, mean some on-air personalities have already lost their jobs and stories about communities like Sherwood Park will be produced with less local input.
Corus says it is centralizing news production to cut costs, pointing to a 16% drop in quarterly revenue and a $36.5 million net loss in the quarter ending May 31, 2026. The company reported television advertising revenue fell 20% and subscriber revenue dropped 13% compared to the year before.
The closure comes just nine days after Rogers Sports and Media shut down Calgary’s 660 NewsRadio and Sportsnet 960 The Fan, cutting 230 jobs across the country. That makes this the second major hit to Alberta media in less than two weeks.
For Sherwood Park residents who rely on Global Edmonton for updates on council decisions, school news, and local events, the shift means those stories may be put together from a distance, missing the on-the-ground knowledge a dedicated local newsroom provides.
Conservative MP Stephanie Kusie, who represents Calgary-Midnapore, condemned the back-to-back closures, saying centralizing regional newscasts means local angles will be lost. “For the second time in less than two weeks, Albertans working in media have lost their livelihoods – and residents have lost a valuable resource; their local news,” she said in a statement.
Former Global Calgary journalist Tomasia DaSilva, who worked at the station from 2007 until recently, says the Calgary newsroom was once “a powerhouse” that trained its focus squarely on the community. “We were number one in the city. We were hyper-focused on local news and making sure that Calgarians knew everything going on in the city,” she said, reflecting a commitment that many fear is now eroding.
