The forecast from July 20 to 26 promises ideal conditions for getting outside, with highs ranging from 12°C to 16°C, which is up to 6 degrees warmer than the seasonal norm of 10°C.
Friday, July 24 is expected to be the warmest day, with a high of 16°C under sunny skies. The rest of the week will see mainly sunny conditions from Tuesday through Saturday. Overnight low temperatures will be between 4°C and 7°C, with clear nights predicted for Friday and Saturday.
Light northwest winds of 30 km/h, gusting up to 50 km/h, are expected Monday and Tuesday. The community is also still experiencing its annual period of 24-hour daylight, which runs through July 25, giving residents extra hours to enjoy outdoor activities.
The warm temperatures align with a broader trend of Arctic warming. According to Climate Change Nunavut, the Arctic has warmed at twice the rate of the rest of the world.
The pleasant weather comes as the region typically sees sea ice beginning to break up in the last week of July. Warm and sunny conditions could accelerate that process this year.
