Aurora, Ontario, residents who want a direct hand in shaping their town’s future have until Friday, August 21, 2026, at 2 p.m. to file nomination papers for mayor, ward councillor, or school board trustee in the upcoming October 26 municipal election.
The Town of Aurora is making a final push for candidates in what will be the second election under the six-ward system. Anyone thinking of running must book an appointment at Town Hall at 100 John West Way to submit forms, a $200 filing fee for mayor or $100 for other offices, and 25 signatures from eligible voters.
On Nomination Day, August 21, walk-in filings are accepted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The positions open include one mayor, six ward councillors, and seats on the York Catholic District School Board, York Region District School Board, and French-language school boards.
Several incumbents have already registered. Mayor Tom Mrakas is seeking re-election, and current Ward 5 Councillor John Gallo and Shawn Deane have also filed for the mayor’s seat. More than 17 candidates across the wards have put their names forward, including returning councillors Michael Thompson and Harold Kim. Ward 1 Councillor Ron Weese has announced he will not seek re-election.
One notable change is that long-time Ward 3 Councillor Wendy Gaertner has said she will not run again, leaving an open race in that ward. The town switched from an at-large system to wards in 2022 to give neighbourhoods more direct representation, and this election continues that model with one councillor elected per ward.
