Garden Hill, Manitoba, is getting a new addiction and harm reduction nurse through the Four Arrows Regional Health Authority, as the community faces a growing waitlist for care.
The Four Arrows Regional Health Authority posted the term position on July 22, 2026, with applications being accepted now. The new hire will split time between the Winnipeg MAMAN Clinic and regular visits to Island Lake First Nations, with Garden Hill as a primary location.
The job posting comes just weeks after the four Island Lake communities declared a regional public health emergency on July 9, 2026, over toxic drugs, rising HIV and hepatitis C cases, and homelessness. About 60 people are on the waitlist for addiction care in Garden Hill alone, and the current nurse only visits every other week.
The position is a one-year contract ending March 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension. It falls under the Manitoba Anisininew Mobile Addictions Network, which has started 109 opioid treatment cases since September 2025 and handed out 364 harm-reduction supplies. The network has also supported nearly 400 patient engagements.
Garden Hill, which has a registered membership of about 4,800 but an on-reserve population of roughly 3,050, has recorded 20 HIV diagnoses and 59 hepatitis C infections since 2017. Only 15.2 per cent of residents were tested during the HIV outbreak declared in January 2026. The new nurse is part of the health authority’s push to move from advocacy to direct care as the team grows to meet urgent needs.
