Residents in Slave Lake, Alberta can expect a wet and windy night as Environment Canada is calling for periods of rain and a risk of thunderstorms beginning late this evening, August 5. While no weather alerts are currently in effect, the forecast warns of gusty winds up to 60 km/h before conditions ease overnight.
At the Slave Lake Airport, conditions were mostly cloudy with a temperature of 20.6°C and west-northwest winds at 15 km/h, gusting to 28 km/h, as of 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. The rain is expected to taper off before morning, with a low of 10°C and winds diminishing to 20 km/h.
Thursday will bring mainly cloudy skies and a high of 18°C, but the outlook improves through the rest of the week. Friday and Saturday are forecast to be sunny with highs of 21°C and 22°C, close to the normal August maximum of 21°C. However, unsettled weather may return early next week with a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday.
The community is particularly mindful of thunderstorm activity given its history with wildfire. In July 2025, lightning from a storm sparked a blaze roughly 20 kilometres from town, triggering an evacuation alert. That event was a reminder of the 2011 wildfire that destroyed about 40 percent of Slave Lake, including the town hall, library, and hundreds of homes, causing $700 million in damages.
