Igloolik, Nunavut is set for a run of bright and mild weather this weekend, with sunshine and temperatures climbing well above normal for early August.
According to Environment Canada, the high on Saturday will reach 15°C — about 7°C above the seasonal daytime high of 8°C. Friday and Sunday will also be sunny, with highs of 14°C both days.
Overnight lows will range from 7°C to 10°C under clear skies, giving residents a break from the cloudy, showery weather earlier in the week. With nearly 20 hours of daylight during the long Arctic summer days, the extended sunshine creates ideal conditions for camping, boating, and other outdoor activities.
Igloolik normally experiences a polar climate, with cold winters and short, cool summers. The community of about 2,000 people sees average August highs around 8°C, so this weekend’s warmth is a welcome change. The Arctic continues to warm at a rate about double the global average, according to the Government of Nunavut’s Climate Change Secretariat, with Nunavut warming by 1.5°C over the past century.
With clear skies through Sunday, travel and outdoor plans should face no weather-related disruptions.
