Families at Heritage Hills Elementary in Sherwood Park can drop off school supplies, meet teachers, and grab a hot dog at the annual Welcome Back to School Barbecue on August 27, 2026. The event runs from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., four days before the first day of classes on August 31.
The barbecue gives parents and students a chance to connect with teachers and prepare for the new school year. The school serves 529 students and offers both regular programming and French Immersion.
August 27 is a Professional Learning Day, which means students do not have classes. Teachers will be getting their classrooms ready, and families can visit in the late afternoon. Classes start on August 31 with a staggered entry schedule for kindergarten and new students that continues through September 3.
Heritage Hills Elementary is the newest K-6 school in Sherwood Park, opening on September 1, 2020, as a replacement for Wye Elementary. The school is led by Principal Kyla Harding and Assistant Principal Carla Kokotailo.
Local efforts like Give4Grades show the need for school supplies in the community. The drive collected over 10,500 items and 58 backpacks in 2026 to help families who may struggle to afford classroom materials.
