Coaldale’s Gem of the West Museum is inviting the community to a free open house on October 3, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate 25 years since its grand opening in 2001. The event will bring together past and present volunteers, board members, staff, donors, and supporters to reflect on the museum’s history and share memories.
The celebration will take place at the museum, located at 1316 20th Street. Visitors can wander through the exhibits, enjoy refreshments, and reconnect with the people who have contributed to the museum over the years. Near the end of the event, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a special 25-year time capsule will be sealed. The capsule will contain photographs, documents, objects, and memories to be opened in 2051.
The museum was founded after a group of residents, led by Erna Goertzen, approached the Town of Coaldale in 1995 with a proposal to preserve the former Mennonite Brethren Church building. The building, declared a Registered Historic Resource in May 1999, underwent a multi-year restoration before opening as the Gem of the West Museum in 2001. The museum now houses over 15,000 artifacts across 15 unique exhibits in approximately 15,000 square feet, making it one of the largest rural museums in Southern Alberta.
