The City of Airdrie, Alberta, will begin installing a temporary bridge in spring 2026 to keep traffic moving while a major road crossing is replaced. The work is focused on the Nose Creek bridge on 8 Street North, just north of Veterans Boulevard, after inspections found the structure is deteriorating and a new replacement is required.
Engineers determined the bridge is aging faster than expected, prompting the City to impose an eight-tonne weight limit. That restriction bars vehicles heavier than 8 tonnes — which can include some fire apparatus and certain transit buses — from using the crossing. The city says emergency services have been consulted and a temporary emergency access has been arranged to maintain service levels.
To avoid a full closure of the corridor during construction, the City will install a temporary detour bridge over Nose Creek to provide continued two-way traffic while the existing structure is removed and a permanent, higher-capacity bridge is built. The City says the temporary bridge is expected to open in spring 2026 and will serve as the primary route during construction, with the new permanent crossing expected to be completed in 2027.
The Nose Creek replacement was originally planned for 2025 but was moved to 2026 because of elevated construction costs. Once finished, the new bridge will increase capacity to better accommodate growing traffic volumes and ensure emergency vehicles can access Airdrie’s northern communities without detours.
