The Region of Durham is inviting applications for affordable rental housing projects across the region, including in Ajax, with $8 million in new funding now available. This money is part of a plan to create more housing for families and residents who are struggling to find a place to live that they can afford.
Applications for the At Home Incentive Program are open until April 2, 2026, at 11:59 p.m., for partners who can build at least five affordable units. Since this program launched three years ago, the regional government has approved $30.5 million to help create 350 rental units in Ajax and other nearby communities.
In one local project, Ledim Developments is using $5 million from the program to build a 25-storey tower at 310 Kingston Road East in Ajax. This building will provide 78 affordable apartments as part of a larger 380-unit development, where nearly half of the total units in the building are specially designed for residents who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices.
The need for these homes is high, as the Durham Access to Social Housing waitlist currently has more than 10,000 households looking for help. These new units will keep rent prices lower than usual, at about 80 per cent of the average market rate for the area.
To help build even more homes, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has provided nearly $22 million to the Town of Ajax through the Housing Accelerator Fund. This federal support is intended to help the town remove hurdles and speed up the construction of different types of housing for the growing community.
