A 24-year-old Oshawa man has been arrested and charged after pointing an imitation firearm and making threats during an altercation in Ajax. The Durham Regional Police Service took the suspect into custody on April 1, 2026, following an investigation into an incident that occurred earlier this spring.
The incident took place on March 13, 2026, at approximately 3:40 a.m. in the area of Bayly Street West and Monarch Avenue. According to police, the suspect and another man were involved in a verbal argument when the suspect brandished an imitation firearm. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, and the victim did not sustain any physical injuries. Investigators have characterized the event as an isolated incident because the two individuals were already acquainted.
Members of the West Crime Team, supported by the East Crime Team and the Tactical Support Unit, located the suspect on April 1. During the arrest, officers executed a search warrant at an Oshawa home where they recovered the imitation firearm used in the incident.
Hedayatullah Atal, 24, faces five charges, including uttering threats, pointing a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, and using an imitation firearm to commit an indictable offence. He was held in custody for a bail hearing. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, pointing a firearm—whether loaded, unloaded, or an imitation—at another person is a serious offence.
This arrest is part of a series of recent incidents involving imitation firearms across the region, including a situation on February 11, 2026, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, where a man brandished a fake weapon outside the emergency department. Police are asking anyone with further information regarding the Ajax incident to contact investigators.
