Residents in Amherst, Nova Scotia, who missed their scheduled waste collection on Tuesday will have to wait until Saturday, January 31, 2026, after heavy snow made it unsafe for trucks to navigate local streets. The delay affects everyone in the Week 1 collection zone, including residents downtown and shop owners near Victoria Square.

The Town of Amherst Public Works and their collection partner, Miller Waste Systems Inc., decided to postpone the service after Environment Canada issued a Yellow Warning (snowfall) for the region on Jan. 27, 2026. The delay affects all three waste streams—garbage, recycling and green carts for food scraps—which have been collected on the same day since the town changed to a same‑day three‑stream system in November 2024.

Local officials are asking residents to pull their bins and bags back from the curb so snowplows can clear the streets, and to return materials to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on Saturday to ensure pickup. According to the Town of Amherst solid waste guidance, green carts are for organic materials only.

Those who are unsure whether they live in the Week 1 zone can check the collection maps from the Cumberland Joint Services Management Authority (CJSMA) or use the ‘Cumberland County Solid Waste’ mobile app. For other questions about schedule changes, residents can contact Town Hall at 902-667-3352; for after-hours public-works emergencies call 902-667-7227. The Town’s Solid Waste contact is Brenda Rioux at 902-667-5141.
