The Great Canadian Dollar Store is growing its presence in Amherst, Nova Scotia, as the retailer prepares to open a new location in the town this spring. This addition is part of a national expansion that will see six new stores open across the country in 2026.
The company, which was founded in 1993, specializes in serving smaller, rural communities with a variety of household goods, toys, and seasonal items priced between $1 and $20. The brand currently operates 126 franchised stores across Canada and has been under the ownership of Kevin and Jane Kane of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, since 2015.
The arrival of the new store aligns with the ongoing efforts of the Town of Amherst to revitalize its downtown core through the Center First strategy. This initiative includes infrastructure improvements such as parking and sidewalk upgrades, public Wi-Fi, and the hosting of community events.
For residents of Amherst, a community of 9,800 people, the store will provide another option for budget-friendly shopping. The local retail market currently includes other discount options, such as the Dollarama location on South Albion Street. The new Great Canadian Dollar Store location is expected to be a notable addition to the commercial landscape in Cumberland County as the town continues to grow.
