The Government of Nova Scotia introduced new rules on February 26, 2026, that will change how elections work for residents and candidates in Amherst. These updates to the provincial laws are meant to modernize the voting process following suggestions from Elections Nova Scotia.

Residents who want to run for office will no longer be required to pay a $200 deposit to start their campaign. Candidates can also now use their own personal credit cards to pay for their advertising and publicity costs directly.

The province has also removed the requirement for returning officers to live in the same community where they are managing the election. Additionally, there are now clearer rules for how money and property can be moved if a candidate chooses to run as an independent or changes their political party.

To help campaigns stay organized, local candidates can now ask for a daily digital update on which voters have already cast their ballots. Attorney General Scott Armstrong said these changes are designed to make the entire election process easier for everyone to navigate.
