The Town of Amherstburg will hold a public meeting on March 9, 2026, to discuss a major proposal that could bring more townhomes and multi-unit buildings to the community. Local leaders are looking at changing the town’s land-use rules to allow a new phase of higher-density housing development in the northern part of town near the Kingsbridge subdivision.
According to the Town of Amherstburg Planning Notices, the application asks to change current property rules from low-density to medium and high-density residential. This shift aligns with the Town of Amherstburg Official Plan adopted in 2025, which focuses on creating a wider variety of housing types to meet provincial growth targets.
The meeting will give residents a chance to speak about how the project might affect local traffic and neighbourhood services like parks and sewers. Concerns have been raised previously by the Kingsbridge Residents Group about road capacity near the Sandwich Street and Front Road corridors as more homes are added to the area, specifically regarding access points at Knobb Hill Drive and Whelan Drive.
This project aligns with the Amherstburg 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, which outlines how the town intends to manage growth while maintaining its character. Local officials, including Mayor Michael Prue, are working to balance the need for more housing options with the practical limits of current local infrastructure.
The public meeting is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Council Chambers, where planning staff will present the full details of the application. Residents can provide feedback in person or in writing before council makes a final decision on the Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendments later this spring.
