The Town of Amherstburg has received $838,000 in provincial funding to help prepare local industrial land for future growth. The funding, announced on March 30, 2026, is part of the provincial Trade-Impacted Communities Program and aims to protect workers and industries in border communities that have been hit hard by United States tariffs.
Amherstburg is the first municipality to receive support from this $40 million provincial program. The grant will go toward the town’s strategy to prepare more than 700 acres of land at the Howard Industrial Park for new businesses. In total, the town is investing over $1.1 million to launch this initiative, which focuses on attracting companies in fields such as advanced manufacturing, agri-business, and clean technology.
Mayor Michael Prue said the funding will help the town attract investment and create more jobs, which will ultimately strengthen the local tax base. Vic Fedeli, the Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, noted that the investment is intended to provide communities with the tools needed to withstand economic pressures and secure long-term growth.
Anthony Leardi, the MPP for Essex, highlighted the town’s history of manufacturing and its skilled workforce as key assets for this new development. He stated that the investment helps position the region for future success and economic resilience.
