Residents in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, are dealing with the aftermath of a major multi‑day winter storm that triggered province‑wide emergency alerts via the National Public Alerting System (Alert Ready) and the NS Alert app on January 25–26, 2026. The storm dumped up to about 40 centimetres of snow in parts of northeastern Nova Scotia and produced wind gusts near 90 km/h in the Antigonish and Cape Breton regions, creating very difficult travel and scattered power outages. While the heaviest snow has tapered off, Environment Canada had transitioned many warnings to blowing‑snow and extreme‑cold advisories for the region as of January 28.

Those conditions are producing dangerous visibility on Highway 104 between Antigonish and New Glasgow; residents are being urged to check the Nova Scotia Plow Tracker before driving. Utility crews from Nova Scotia Power are working to restore power after outages caused largely by heavy snowfall and wind‑related damage, and the company has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate restorations. The Town of Antigonish is reminding people to be ready to look after themselves for at least 72 hours if they lose power or heat.

Officials sent emergency warnings through the National Public Alerting System (Alert Ready) and the provincial NS Alert mobile app; residents can download those services to receive real‑time updates to phones or via Wi‑Fi. The provincial government, Public Works Minister Fred Tilley said, has mobilized about 400 pieces of snow‑clearing equipment to help clear roads while temperatures remain below freezing.
