Residents in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, have until the end of the day today, March 24, 2026, to register for a public forum about local housing challenges. The event is being promoted by the Antigonish Kids First Family Resource Centre and aims to bring the community together to find solutions for the area’s housing needs.
The forum, titled “Coming Together to Care for Our Community,” will take place on April 1, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Charles V. Keating Centre on the St. Francis Xavier University campus. Organized by the Antigonish Community Health Board, the meeting will focus on the impact housing has on the health and well-being of local citizens.
Antigonish is currently facing a projected shortage of 580 housing units by 2027. Local data shows that 280 people in Antigonish and Guysborough counties are currently homeless or living in vulnerable conditions, highlighting the urgency of the community discussion.
Several projects are already working to address these issues, including a 150-unit development planned by the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society on land near St. Martha’s Regional Hospital. This development will include special second-stage housing units for women and children leaving dangerous situations, which will be managed by the Naomi Society. Additionally, the Town and Municipality of Antigonish are using more than $3.2 million in federal Housing Accelerator Fund investment to help speed up the construction of new homes over the next decade.
Government investments of over $4.1 million for water and sewer upgrades on West and James streets will also support the creation of up to 323 new homes. These infrastructure plans include the development of 48 affordable units to help alleviate local supply pressures.
