Residents in Arviat, Nunavut, are preparing for extreme winter weather and a deep freeze starting February 14, 2026, which could interrupt essential local services. According to Environment Canada, the community will face temperatures as low as minus 37 degrees Celsius and blowing snow that may stop water and sewage trucks from making their rounds. This cold snap is expected to last until at least February 20, 2026.
The forecast shows a high risk of frostbite on Saturday and Sunday as wind chills are expected to reach minus 35. These temperatures are much lower than the seasonal normal low of minus 31 degrees for this time of year. Conditions are expected to become more difficult on Monday, February 16, when high winds and snow will likely reduce visibility across the hamlet.
Because Arviat relies on a trucked system for water and sewage, bad weather often causes service delays to keep workers safe. Local officials are asking residents to conserve water and check on their neighbours to make sure everyone stays safe during the cold snap. Residents are also advised to monitor their home heating systems to prevent pipes from freezing while temperatures remain significantly below normal.
