Residents of Arviat, Nunavut, are facing dangerous weather conditions as extreme cold and blowing snow return to the community on March 12, 2026. According to Environment Canada, the wind chill is expected to drop as low as -56 overnight. These conditions create an immediate risk for anyone spending time outdoors.

High winds are also moving through the area, with northwest gusts reaching up to 60 km/h on the evening of March 12 and continuing into March 13. This combination of wind and light snow is expected to reduce visibility and make travel hazardous throughout the region. Officials are encouraging residents to exercise extreme caution if they must be out in the community.

The extreme wind chill means that frostbite can occur on exposed skin within minutes. Environment Canada has issued a warning for these hazardous conditions, noting that the severe cold is expected to persist through Friday. Residents are advised to stay informed of weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

Located on the western shore of Hudson Bay, Arviat often experiences intense winds that make low temperatures feel significantly colder. While the community is used to severe winters, wind chills dropping below -50 are recognized as especially dangerous. Heeding official guidance is necessary to avoid serious cold-related injuries during this event.
