People living in Arviat, Nunavut will see more soldiers and aircraft in the area as the Canadian Armed Forces carries out its yearly northern training exercise. According to Nunavut Emergency Management, the training known as Operation Nanook-Nunalivut will continue until March 13, 2026.
Residents can expect to hear more noise from low-flying planes and helicopters near the local airport and in designated training zones. The Canadian Armed Forces will also conduct live-fire artillery practice in controlled areas and under-ice diving in the water offshore.
Members of the 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group are taking part by carrying out long-range patrols in the region. Joint Task Force North has set up a temporary headquarters for the work at the research station in Cambridge Bay to help manage these activities across the territories.
This increase in activity comes just as Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami announced that Arviat will be the site for the main campus of the new Inuit Nunangat University. These exercises are focused on making sure the military is ready to work in the extreme cold of the North.
