Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas recently hosted the inaugural Southlake Health Distributed Health Network Forum, bringing together municipal leaders from across the region to coordinate on healthcare planning for rapidly growing communities. The meeting focused on aligning priorities to ensure medical services keep pace with the needs of residents in Aurora and surrounding areas.

As one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the region, with its population rising significantly since 2016, Aurora is part of Southlake Health’s catchment area, which is expanding at twice the provincial rate. This growth has put pressure on existing infrastructure, with the hospital aiming to transition into a distributed network to provide care closer to where people live.

This transformation is part of a 10-year strategy launched in November 2024, which includes plans for a second hospital site to help reduce the strain on local acute care capacity. Southlake Health, which has been recognized by Newsweek as one of the top community hospitals in the country for eight consecutive years, is currently reviewing eight shortlisted locations for the new facility. An announcement regarding the preferred site is expected this spring, with communities including East Gwillimbury, Georgina, and Bradford West Gwillimbury under consideration.

The forum is part of a broader push for integrated healthcare through the Northern York South Simcoe Ontario Health Team, which connects providers across multiple municipalities. By working together, local leaders hope to address long-standing challenges in hospital capacity and improve access to high-quality care for residents across the region.
