Residents in Aurora, Ontario, are now required to book a pickup for bulky household items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances rather than simply leaving them at the curb. The change officially began on January 1, 2026, ending automatic curbside bulky-item collection during regular garbage runs.

To get these items picked up, residents must call GFL Environmental at 1-866-421-5625 to book a pickup for their regular garbage day. Each household may place up to five bulky items at the curb for a scheduled pickup, and items must be set out by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day.

The Town of Aurora updated the service following the Ontario Blue Box Transition (Ontario Regulation 391/21), which transferred responsibility for blue-box recycling to producers. The town says the booking system helps streamline waste operations and better manage the collection and diversion of large items — particularly metal appliances — so fewer recoverable materials are sent to landfill.

The Town and its contractor, GFL, advise safety rules for bulky-item pickups: for example, remove doors from refrigerators, freezers, ovens, dishwashers, washers and dryers before placing them at the curb. The curbside bulky-item service does not accept hazardous materials (such as batteries, paint, motor oil or propane tanks) or construction and demolition waste (including wood and drywall); those materials must be disposed of through alternate drop-off or depot services.
