Students and families from Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School in Aurora, Ontario, participated in a regional event to celebrate Black achievements in science and technology on February 25, 2026. The gathering, titled Students and Families Celebrate Black Excellence in STEM, took place at Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School to provide local youth with hands-on learning and mentorship.

The evening featured coding workshops led by engineering students from Ontario Tech University and interactive activities such as making ice cream to explain scientific concepts. Attendees also participated in student-led panels that highlighted the contributions of Black innovators in fields like engineering and mathematics.

Before the workshops began, families and educators shared a dinner and spent time networking with professionals from various technical industries. According to the school board’s Centre for Black Student Excellence, the event was part of a series of celebrations held at four different schools across the region.

This initiative aims to help Black students see themselves represented in high-demand careers while providing families with tools to support academic success. The event was organized as part of a wider effort to build community connections and encourage youth to explore paths in science and technology.
