Aurora, Ontario, is under a yellow heat warning from Environment Canada as a hot and humid air mass settles over the region this week. Monday afternoon temperatures hit 29.5°C with a humidex of 34 and a very high UV index of 8, but Tuesday is expected to be the peak of the heat event with a high of 36°C and a humidex of 43.
The Environment Canada warning covers Newmarket, Georgina, and Northern York Region. It notes the heat will likely continue into Wednesday or Thursday evening, with daytime highs between 30°C and 37°C and humidex values reaching 38 to 45.
Normally, Aurora’s July high is around 26°C. This is the second major heat wave to hit Ontario this summer, following one around Canada Day. The combination of heat and humidity can also worsen air quality, potentially pushing the Air Quality Health Index into the high-risk category.
York Region Public Health reminds residents that heat stroke is a medical emergency. Signs include red, hot and dry skin, dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Anyone with these symptoms should call 911 immediately. Heat exhaustion symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating, and intense fatigue are also warning signs.
Those most at risk include seniors, infants, people with chronic health conditions, people taking certain medications, outdoor workers, isolated individuals, homeless people, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Residents are urged to check on vulnerable neighbours and stay hydrated during this hot stretch.
