York Region has issued construction notices for road preservation work beginning in mid-May 2026, which will affect traffic on Yonge Street in Newmarket and Aurora, as well as on Prospect Street and Water Street in Newmarket.
The work, which includes repairing and adjusting manholes and catch basins, requires lane reductions during construction hours. Crews will operate from Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as well as night work Monday to Saturday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. While these lane reductions are necessary, all affected roads will remain open to through traffic, and access to local homes and businesses will be maintained.
In addition to this preservation work, the ongoing major widening project on Yonge Street between Davis Drive and Green Lane continues. This long-term initiative is expected to wrap up in late 2027 and aims to support significant future growth by expanding the road from four to six lanes, adding High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, new cycle tracks, sidewalks, and improved traffic signals. This area currently serves 50,000 vehicles daily, with planners anticipating a 400 percent increase in pedestrian traffic by 2041.
These projects are part of a broader regional effort, with York Regional Council having approved 377 million dollars for the roads system as part of a capital plan covering 92 projects across the region. Residents should expect potential delays and are encouraged to plan for extra travel time when driving through these areas.
