Aurora residents looking to buy a new home could see significant savings starting next month following a joint announcement from the Ontario and federal governments. On March 25, 2026, officials confirmed a temporary expansion of the tax rebate for new home purchases in Ontario, which will remove the full 13 per cent tax on homes valued up to $1 million.

The plan is set to run from April 1, 2026, until March 31, 2027, and applies to all buyers of new homes. While properties valued up to $1 million receive a full 13 per cent tax removal, homes valued up to $1.5 million are eligible for the maximum rebate of $130,000. This measure aims to lower the upfront costs of moving into a newly built house or townhome.

Mayor Tom Mrakas welcomed the move, noting that it provides meaningful help for residents facing housing affordability challenges. He stated that while the town has taken its own steps to support growth, real progress requires all levels of government to work together.

This tax relief is expected to support about 21,000 jobs and encourage the construction of 8,000 additional homes across the province. The Ontario Home Builders’ Association and BILD both described the change as a major step for the industry and prospective buyers.

The provincial government will pay for the 8 per cent portion of the tax, while the federal government will cover the remaining 5 per cent. In Aurora, where townhome prices have recently dropped by more than 25 per cent from their peak, the rebate is intended to make the dream of owning a home more reachable for local families.
