Utility workers are continuing repairs to the power grid in Aurora, Ontario, on January 25, 2026, after a major winter storm that struck the area over the weekend of January 23–24. Most residents in the middle of town have had power restored, while crews continue to work on more difficult outages in rural spots such as the Oak Ridges Moraine. The storm, which brought heavy ice and wind gusts exceeding 70 kilometres per hour, caused trees and poles to snap across the region.
Hydro One said its crews have been working 16‑hour shifts in sub‑zero temperatures to fix lines damaged by the ice; Alectra Utilities and other crews are also working to restore service in urban areas. While the town centre is largely restored, some people living in rural areas are still waiting for power because the snowy, high‑elevation terrain is harder for repair trucks to reach. Many rural homes rely on electric pumps for well water, making extended outages a significant health and safety concern and a priority for responders.
Hydro One advises everyone to stay at least 10 metres away from any downed power lines — roughly the length of a school bus — and to treat every downed line as live, even if it does not appear to be sparking. If you still have no power or see a fallen wire: residents in Hydro One territory can call 1‑800‑434‑1235 or text ‘outage’ to 92887 (WATTS). Alectra Utilities customers in the Town of Aurora should report outages to Alectra at 1‑877‑963‑6900 or via Alectra’s outage map and reporting tools.
The town has been working with York Regional Police to manage road closures while crews clear heavy tree limbs from the streets. Residents have used social media to thank the workers who spent the weekend restoring heat and power to local homes. Repair work will continue until the last homes in the outlying areas are reconnected to the grid.
