Drivers in Aurora should prepare for upcoming road work on Centre Street as Metrolinx begins upgrades to the area surrounding the Aurora GO Station. Starting April 6, 2026, crews will be working on the road between Walton Drive and Duggan Lane, with construction taking place on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM through June 2026.
While the project is underway, commuters should expect possible intermittent lane closures in the area. Both directions of traffic will remain open, and GO Transit service will continue to operate as usual. Pedestrian access to the station will not be affected by this specific road work.
This construction is part of a larger modernization project for the local station, which first opened in 1853 and is recognized as a provincial and federal heritage property. The ongoing improvements, which began in August 2023 and are expected to be finished by December 2027, include the addition of a second track and platform, a new pedestrian tunnel with elevators, and 380 new overflow parking spaces at 9 Scanlon Court. These upgrades are designed to support future all-day, two-way 15-minute train service between Aurora and Union Station, a necessity as the population of York Region is projected to grow by 68 percent over the next 25 years.
While Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas has been a supporter of these station improvements, he has also recently raised concerns regarding delays on other local infrastructure projects, such as the Wellington Street underpass, which he described as unacceptable. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time when driving through the Centre Street area while these upgrades are being completed.
