On January 27, 2026, the Office of the Regional Chair of the Regional Municipality of York issued a formal statement marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The statement was issued from the York Region Administrative Centre in Newmarket and applies to all nine municipalities in the Region, including the Town of Aurora. The observance coincides with the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

The recognition follows the United Nations’ 2026 theme, “Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights,” and the Region’s message serves as both a memorial for those lost and a commitment to protecting human rights today. Local officials said they will use the day to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and to reaffirm efforts to combat antisemitism in the community.

In Aurora, Chabad Lubavitch of Aurora serves as a local hub for Jewish residents seeking support or religious services at this time. Ontario introduced mandatory Holocaust education for Grade 6 students effective September 2023; the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) implements that provincial requirement across Aurora schools.

Additional resources and learning programs are available through the Toronto Holocaust Museum, based at the UJA Sherman Campus, which offers survivor testimony and signature programs for schools and community groups in the northern GTA. UNESCO and the United Nations emphasize that annual ceremonies and educational programs keep survivors’ stories alive for future generations.
