Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is hosting a work-in-progress showing and open rehearsal of Tanya Tagaq’s Split Tooth: Saputjiji at the Jenny Belzberg Theatre on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 7:30 p.m., billed as a rare chance to see a stage piece still in development and followed by a public Q&A,

Tickets for the Banff presentation are on sale through Banff Centre’s events feed, with Tier A seats at $35 and Tier B at $25. The listing describes the evening as an open rehearsal and work-in-progress showing that lets audiences watch the creative process unfold and ask questions of the team afterward.

The piece expands on Tagaq’s novel Split Tooth and draws on her album Saputjiji. It is being directed by Kaneza Schaal and credits visual/scenographic work by Christopher Myers among the creative team; the National Arts Centre’s National Creation Fund project page notes the NAC has invested $195,000 to support the work’s final development, residencies and travel costs for artists from the North.

Banff’s December showing comes ahead of planned premiere presentations in Vancouver tied to the PuSh Festival and the Chan Centre in February 2026. Presenting partners list the Vancouver engagement for February 5, 2026, with other co-producers and presenters named including Music on Main and Brooklyn Academy of Music’s NEXT WAVE Festival.

Institutions commonly host in-progress showings as part of residency and creative development work; Banff’s event is presented in that spirit. For Banff, the event is part of the winter programming rollout announced on November 19, 2025; the season announcement frames the showing as both a local cultural opportunity and a step in the work’s national development.

Banff’s event page describes the presentation: “Experience a work-in-progress showing and open rehearsal of Tanya Tagaq’s Split Tooth: Saputjiji. This presentation offers audiences a rare look into the creative process behind a new performance in development. A Q&A with the creative team will follow the presentation.” The Banff listing does not make a full run or touring schedule explicit; the showing is presented as a development presentation connected to the project’s larger co-production and funding partners.

Media or audience members seeking confirmation about the presence of the full creative team, press policies for the open rehearsal, or whether the Banff showing will lead to a longer run can contact Banff Centre communications. Banff Centre’s season announcement lists Carly Maga, Director, Communications, as media contact (carly_maga@banffcentre.ca; tel: +1.403.763.6210; cell: +1.403.431.3423).
