The Town of Banff in Alberta will meet on February 24, 2026, to review the community’s progress on building new homes and a growing local debate over parking rules. The council recently released an agenda showing the town is moving ahead with plans to increase housing density, though some residents are pushing back against the removal of parking requirements.

According to a report from the Banff Town Council, the town has already issued 150 building permits out of a 240-unit goal required by a federal housing agreement. There are currently 603 potential new homes at various stages of the planning and approval process across the community.

Residents in the Middle Springs area have started a formal protest regarding rules that allow new buildings to be constructed without dedicated parking spots. These neighbours are asking the town to bring back parking requirements, claiming that the current policy is creating too much traffic and congestion on local roads.

The meeting will also cover a request to have the federal government label the Calgary-to-Banff train project as a priority to help move the plan forward. Additionally, the Governance and Finance Committee will discuss an update to the town’s gift policy that would allow officials to accept tokens of appreciation worth up to $315.
