Environment Canada has issued an ongoing yellow snowfall warning for Highway 93, also known as the Icefields Parkway, near Banff, Alberta, on February 27, 2026. This long-duration event is expected to bring 30 centimetres or more of snow to the area throughout the day before tapering off in the evening.
The heaviest snow is expected to fall on the high-elevation stretch between the Columbia Icefields and Lake Louise. Officials warn that the weather will likely cause hazardous driving conditions, poor visibility, and travel delays for anyone using the mountain route.
According to Parks Canada, winter tires or chains are legally required for all vehicles traveling on this road until April 1. Drivers should be aware that there is no cell phone reception, gas stations, or food services available on the 230-kilometre stretch of highway between Lake Louise and Jasper during the winter months.
Snow clearing on the Icefields Parkway typically takes place only between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM, which may lead to heavy snow build-up on the road surface outside of those hours. Residents and visitors are encouraged to allow for extra travel time and to carry emergency supplies if they must travel through the park.
