Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Banff, Alberta, with between 20 and 30 centimetres of snow expected to fall through Thursday morning, March 26, 2026. Officials say the heaviest snow was expected to arrive on Tuesday, though higher mountain areas could see more than 30 centimetres in total.
Travel is expected to be difficult during this time as the snow will likely make it hard to see and could lead to road closures. Motorists are being urged to leave early for trips and allow for extra travel time while the warning remains in effect.
According to Parks Canada, this new round of winter weather follows a recent period of rain and warmth that caused major avalanche risks. Those conditions previously forced the closure of the Icefields Parkway between March 18 and March 21, 2026, after safety crews had to manage large slides on the highway.
While the Banff area typically sees about 27 centimetres of snow across the entire month of March, this storm is forecast to bring nearly that same amount in just a few days. Conditions are expected to turn into light flurries by Thursday afternoon with weather conditions improving through the weekend.
