The MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie, Ontario, is presenting the 2026 edition of its long-running Benefactor Art Exchange, an annual program that lets members borrow original artwork for their homes or offices. The Benefactor Art Exchange allows members to select an original work to display on a one-year loan, with the option to purchase the piece during the loan period or at the end of the year. The initiative showcases regional artists and raises funds that support the gallery’s pursuit of Category A designation from the Government of Canada.

To join the program, residents can sign up to Become a Benefactor for an annual fee of $500; Junior Benefactor memberships are available for $365 for people under 40. These membership donations help fund gallery programs and operations and give members the chance to take regional (Simcoe County) artwork on loan for a year before deciding whether to purchase it.

The gallery is working toward Category A designation, a federal recognition that would allow the institution to grow its collection and facilitate loans and exhibitions of works of national significance. Money raised from the Benefactor Art Exchange helps fund facility upgrades required to meet Category A collection-care standards (as identified in a recent facility audit), including measures to preserve and protect the collection.

Residents can view the available work during a preview from March 2 to March 26, 2026. An artist meet-and-greet is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 2026 (6:30–8:00 p.m.), followed by the Benefactor Art Exchange event on Thursday, March 26, 2026 (6:30–9:00 p.m.), when members select their loaned pieces. The program has been part of the community for more than 25 years and has been noted as a successful regional initiative.

Events will take place at the MacLaren Art Centre, 37 Mulcaster Street, Barrie, ON. The Carnegie Room has been undergoing repairs but is expected to be available for the spring exchange. The exhibition features over 100 works for members to choose from during the upcoming exchange.
