The City of Barrie, Ontario, remains under a Significant Weather Event declaration on February 14, 2026, as crews work through the night to clear a record-breaking amount of snow. Since the start of November, the area has received more than 300 centimetres of snow – a milestone reached by late January representing nearly 10 feet of accumulation.

Public works crews are currently focusing on main roads and bus routes to haul away large piles of snow that have made lanes too narrow for safe driving. Once these busier streets are widened, workers will move into residential neighborhoods to clear side streets and sidewalks.

This winter has resulted in the longest continuous Significant Weather Event in the city’s history, which originally began on December 28, 2025. Because of the extreme conditions, the city has officially suspended its usual timelines for how quickly every street must be plowed.

Residents using local buses or the regional train line should expect travel disruptions, with some delays lasting up to 60 minutes. Officials are asking people to avoid any unnecessary travel while heavy machinery is out working on the roads.

According to the City of Barrie, the goal is to have residential streets and sidewalks cleared within 48 hours after the snow stops falling. Crews will continue to work around the clock to address the massive backlog of snow clearing across the community.
