The City of Barrie, Ontario, is under a significant weather event declaration as a major winter storm brings heavy snow and freezing rain to the area on February 18, 2026. Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning, predicting between 10 and 15 centimetres of accumulation.

Local maintenance crews from the City of Barrie are prioritizing main roads to clear as much snow as possible before the storm intensifies. The city uses the significant weather event status to alert residents that the storm is severe enough to delay normal snow clearing on local streets.

People driving on Highway 400 should expect slower commutes due to hazardous conditions and a moving maintenance project on the southbound lanes. Updates from Ontario 511 show the work between Highway 11 and Mapleview Drive is expected to continue until February 21, 2026.

The Ontario Provincial Police warned that visibility could drop to near zero suddenly during the storm, which may lead to road closures. This weather arrives as the Ministry of Transportation prepares for major construction in the city, including replacing the Bayfield Street bridge and its highway ramps later in 2026.
