Bathurst High School has launched several activities this February to celebrate Black History Month in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Following a district notice from the Anglophone North School District, the school is hosting events that align with the 2026 national theme honoring Black contributions across generations.

Students are using new local resources, including the recently released history book Beyond Borders by Jennifer Dow, to learn about the legacy of Black New Brunswickers. The school is using resources from the New Brunswick Black History Society, which offers virtual walk‑throughs and digital archives that can be incorporated into classrooms. These tools help students in northern communities connect with historical records and stories that were often absent from older textbooks.

2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the national recognition of Black History Month in Canada. Canadian Heritage’s 2026 theme is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” At the school, student groups are among those organizing facts, displays and presentations to help classmates learn about this heritage throughout February.
