The Town of Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador, is inviting youth players to sign up for the eighth annual Light the Lamp street hockey tournament on June 20-21, 2026. The competition takes place at the Wilbur Sparkes Complex and is recognized as the largest youth street hockey event in the province. This gathering is a major part of the local summer calendar and focuses on getting kids active in the community.
Tournament organizers are currently looking for sponsors and food vendors to help with the costs of running the weekend. Money raised through these partnerships pays for essential items like hockey equipment, gifts for participants, and meals for the volunteers. Ian Flynn, the Director of Sports and Recreation for the town, is leading the effort to prepare for the hundreds of teams expected to attend.
The event has grown significantly since it began in 2018 and now hosts about 270 teams while drawing thousands of visitors to the area. To help keep the tournament accessible for families, the town government decided not to increase the fees for using outdoor recreation spaces this year. This commitment in the local budget ensures that the community can continue to host large sports events without adding extra costs for residents.
