Statistics Canada is hiring locally in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador, to help with the 2026 Census. The agency has posted job openings for census takers, also known as enumerators, with pay of $25.87 per hour. This recruitment is part of a national effort to fill thousands of temporary positions — about 32,000 across Canada — ahead of the official count in May 2026.

According to Statistics Canada, these positions are temporary. Crew leader (supervisory) roles may run from March 2026 through July 2026, while enumerator (non‑supervisory) roles generally run from May 2026 through July 2026, depending on the position and location. Workers will go door to door to collect completed census questionnaires from households that have not responded online. Crew leaders are paid $31.32 per hour and are eligible to claim authorized expenses such as mileage.

To apply, candidates must have reached the age of majority in their province or territory of residence (which is 19 in Newfoundland and Labrador) and must reside in Canada with a Canadian home address. Enumerators must be available to work a minimum average of 20 hours per week, with most work occurring in the evenings and on weekends; crew leaders are expected to be available full time. The hiring process involves an online application, reference checks, and a security screening — which includes a name‑based criminal record check and a credit check — and interviews for supervisory roles.

Listings and applications are available through the official Census job portal (census.gc.ca) and are also posted on the Government of Canada Job Bank. These temporary positions offer local, short‑term employment that pays well above the provincial minimum wage (Newfoundland and Labrador’s general minimum wage is $16.00 per hour, effective April 1, 2025). Getting an accurate population count helps determine funding and planning for local services such as health care and transportation infrastructure. Statistics Canada is aiming to hire approximately 32,000 workers across the country for the 2026 Census.
